NCWA 2023 Conference – Removing the Gender Divide [Recap & Photos]

The NCWA AGM and Conference ‘Removing the Gender Divide’ including delegates from NCW Constituent Councils from all Australian States was recenbtly held at HC Combes Centre, Kirribilli, (Tuesday, 17th of October 2023). A Reception was also held at Admiralty House on Tuesday evening hosted by the NCWA Patron, Her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley.

This important work by YWCA Canberra aims to address the chronic undersupply of family-sized homes and emergency accommodation.With the support of the Australian Government's Department of Social Services, YWCA Canberra will soon add to the city's undersupply of family-sized homes available for emergency accommodation. Two new homes will be established, offering respite for mothers and children escaping violence. The $1.6 million grant is a call to action. It's a step towards providing more than just a roof - it's about building secure, supportive communities for women who are fleeing violence. Dr Tulika Saxena, Director of YWCA Canberra's Violence Prevention and DV Response Service at YWCA Canberra says the funding is "a drop in the ocean" of the need for safe housing, but it's a positive step. buff.ly/3XZuBT8 ... "A spokesperson for the Victorian government said the state was "leading the nation with its work to end family violence"."More than $3.8 billion [has been] invested since the Royal Commission into Family Violence, more than every other state and territory combined," the spokesperson said."This includes millions of dollars to deliver system-wide changes to keep victim-survivors safe, including a suite of responses to keep perpetrators accountable and responsible for stopping their violence."But we know there is more work to be done. "Employers could be sued for disability discrimination if they fail to make “reasonable adjustments” for women going through menopause under new guidance issued by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) on Thursday, amid concern over the number of women leaving their jobs due to symptoms.If the symptoms have a long term and substantial impact on a woman’s ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities they may be considered a disability, the EHRC say.Under the Equality Act 2010, an employer will be under a legal obligation to make reasonable adjustments and to not discriminate against workers.The guidance also states that workers experiencing symptoms may be protected against less favourable treatment related to their menopause symptoms on the grounds of age and sex." ...
